If you don't rev it over 5000 RPM, you're barely using half of RPM the engine is designed for - no harm in revving it up and going all the way to the rev limiter, ie. just before it, as it likes it! Ymmv The 1250 makes over 75 ft/lb of torque between 2k and 8k RPM. Over 80 between 4k and 7750.

Overview of the highlights of The BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT: • Further developed boxer engine with BMW ShiftCam Technology forvariation of the valve timings and valve stroke on the intake side. • Even more power across the entire engine speed range, optimisedfuel consumption and emission levels, increased running smoothness and refinement.

For 2018 R1200GS BMW has lowered the requirement to 87 AKI/ (R+M)2 which is regular in low elevation states. I personally am of the opinion that the new recommendation was made without BMW modifying the engine The two side tanks include a fuel pump which kicks in when the low-fuel light comes on, emptying the side tanks into the main tank. Not sure how the under seat tank works yet. With all three tanks, the total fuel capacity is raised to 41 liters.
Good point about only being able to travel as far as the smallest tank in the group. It's also not hard to carry my one gallon fuel bladder and/or (2) 1L MSR fuel bottles in the Mosko Aux Pockets. That's and added 1.5gal of fuel, puts it within 70-ish miles of range to the GSA and no added cost or weight penalty. Hmmmm..
